Overpayment Officer

An opportunity for an Overpayment Officer has become available to join the Housing Benefit Overpayment recovery team in the Revenues & Benefits Shared Service between East Herts Council & Stevenage Borough Council.   

This motivated and highly professional team is looking for an individual committed to excellence in their work and with a passion for detail.

You will manage a caseload of overpayment debts, and ensure that they are pursued through the recovery process.  This will include making and monitoring arrangements with customers, maintaining records and reporting on progress.

You will have strong communication and negotiation skills, and be able to confidently use spreadsheets.  You will also be able to demonstrate high levels of customer service and an understanding of the customer base.

About you

This role will suit a dedicated, enthusiastic, well-organised and self-motivated team-player who enjoys working in a customer facing environment.

The ideal candidate will:

  • demonstrate an  ability to deal with challenging situations using tact and diplomacy
  • have the ability to work in  a busy administration role within an office environment
  • demonstrate competency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • have excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • relevant experience in a Revenues/Benefits or similar environment
  • experience of using Capita Benefits Software.
  • be able to relay complex information about Benefits and Council tax both verbally and in writing.
